A semi-detached house from the 1930s was to be sustainably transformed for a family of six. The goal was to create an open, communicative living atmosphere with seamless transitions and vertical sightlines. Spacious voids were intentionally used as a design element, prioritizing spatial quality over mere floor space efficiency.
A key focus was a respectful approach to the existing structure. Traces of the transformation were meant to remain visible, telling the story of the house. Sustainable, healthy materials—especially clay—were of the highest priority. The building was designed to generate no waste in the future but instead to withstand future changes through durable, deconstructable materials.
This architectural challenge required a spirit of experimentation and a rethinking of materials and construction methods—an approach that the clients wholeheartedly embraced, redefining sustainable building within existing structures.
